Art in Ibiza: The New Era of Creativity on the White Island
Enjoying art in Ibiza is possible thanks to its galleries, museums, and festivals, which demonstrate the attraction the island has held for artists since the early 20th century. If you too want to embrace its inspiring spirit, step away from the towel for a while and venture out to explore its more creative personality. On the White Island, the energy is felt not just on the beaches and in the clubs…
Many artists, intellectuals, writers, and architects came to Ibiza on holiday and decided to settle there for a time or permanently. The philosopher Walter Benjamin, the artist Raoul Hausmann, the painters Laureà Barrau, Wolfgang Schulze “Wols”, and Will Faber, the journalist Paul Elliot, and the architects Erwin Broner and Walter Gropius are some of the notable figures who arrived in Ibiza with no return ticket in the first half of the 20th century, their suitcases filled with avant-garde influences, paving the way for the art scene in present-day Ibiza.
An island with a long-standing presence in the national contemporary art scene
In the late 1950s, Ibiza captivated numerous European artists who found it to be a land beyond conventions and trends, unleashing their creativity. That melting pot of painters and sculptors, with diverse styles and backgrounds, crystallised into the Grupo Ibiza 59, a collective formed by the island-based artists Erwin Bechtold, Hans Laabs, Egon Neubauer, Heinz Trökes, Bob Munford, Erwin Broner, Bertil Sjoeberg, Katja Meiroswsky, and Antonio Ruiz. A few years later, local Ibizan artists followed suit with the Grupo Puget, which brought together Ferrer Guasch, Antonio Pomar, Vicent Calbet, and Marí Ribas “Portmany.”
Works from both collectives can be seen at the Museum of Contemporary Art Ibiza, located in Dalt Vila. Inaugurated in 1969 , it is one of the oldest of its kind in Spain. Among its collections, the award-winning works from the Ibiza Biennial and the Ibizagráfic Biennial stand out, along with the collection of drawings by Marí Ribas “Portmany” and the very interesting collection of handmade posters from the 1970s from the now-defunct but historic Carl van der Voort gallery. An essential visit that cannot be missed from any art itinerary in Ibiza.
The new creative era: festivals, galleries, and other exhibition spaces
Enjoying this type of cultural tourism in Ibiza is easy thanks to the diverse range of galleries spread across the island and the growing number of exhibitions and artistic festivals that feature in its cultural agenda, especially during the tourist season. If you don’t want to stray from the beach, you’ll have to come up with a good excuse…

Galleries and Other Exhibition Spaces
The gallery scene on the White Island is dynamic, with established venues coexisting with newly arrived art spaces, some that endure for a limited time and others that have an added special character, such as La Nave Salinas, located on Ses Salines beach, or Casa Broner, an excellent example of rationalist architecture in Ibiza.
Espacio Micus
Nestled in the outskirts of Jesús, this small gallery was founded and designed in the late ’80s by Eduard Micus, a prolific abstract painter born in Germany.
Parra & Romero
This art gallery, originating from Madrid, focuses on the new languages of contemporary art and has two spaces in Ibiza: the Warehouse, an industrial building dedicated to large-format works; and the gallery, located in Santa Gertrudis.
La Nave Salinas
Lío Malca, a renowned art collector, gallerist, and hotelier, revitalised an abandoned salt warehouse, transforming it into a unique space in Ibiza that each season hosts a prominent exhibition on an artist from his collection.
Adda Gallery Ibiza
Located in Cala de Bou, it is Ibiza’s first gallery specialising in street art, with a special emphasis on the most groundbreaking projects. Its founder is Anna Dimitrova, one of the most influential figures in urban art in Spain.
Marta Torres
The gallery showcases works by the artist, as well as by emerging and renowned artists such as Joan Miró and Miguel Barceló. A stop to include on a tour around the city of Ibiza.
More spaces to create a gallery route in Ibiza
Other stops to include on an art tour of Ibiza, perhaps on the way back from the beach or before dinner, are the Garden Art Gallery, with sculptures distributed throughout the garden of this cactus and succulent nursery, and the following exhibition spaces, which often host temporary exhibitions: Far de Ses Coves Blanques (Sant Antoni), Sa Nostra Sala Gallery (Ibiza) and the Can Jeroni Cultural Centre (Sant Josep), among others.
